completed under the guidance of Jason Matthews Gottlieb at MICA.

THE TASK

Create a persona or alter ego to use as a lens to help frame and define the final design. Who is she? A psychic who uses her peculiar set of oracle cards to reveal racial biases and past microaggressions in her client sessions.

The oracle deck contains 14 personas and one guidebook. It elicits a candid dialogue about the underlying implications and impact of using microaggressions.

DISTORTED TYPE

Throughout the project, I looked for ways to infuse the twisted undertones of microaggressions into the visual language. Scanning and distorting these derogatory comments helped emphasize the persona’s distorted views of marginalized people.

POP HORROR ILLUSTRATIONS

Colorful and expressive, yet, gritty and creepy at their core, these images exude the same subversive energy and effect as microaggressors: well-intentioned individuals, confident and clueless of the significance behind their “harmless” comments.

MONOCHROMATIC PALETTE

By making each persona a different monochromatic skin color, it avoids inferring the appearance of a “typical” microaggressor. These comments can come from anyone, regardless of skin color, gender, or background.
